Organelles Flashcards
Functions
Cell wall
supports and gives structure to plant cells
Cell membrane
forms a barrier between adjacent cells, and allows transport across the membrane by means of diffusion, osmosis and active transport
Nucleus
contains chromatin network (DNA) and is known as the “control centre of the cell”
Mitochondria
plays important role during cellular respiration by converting nutrients into chemical energy (ATP)
Cytoplasm
contains cell organelles, provides the medium for vital cellular processes
Ribosomes
assists with protein synthesis
endoplasmic reticulum
(SER & RER)
responsible for the synthesis, folding, modification, and transport of proteins
Golgi body/apparatus
process and package proteins and lipid molecules destined to be exported from the cell or within the cell;
Plastids
responsible for manufacturing and storage of important chemical compounds and pigments used by the cells;
Vacuoles
responsible for storage, osmoregulation, cellular digestion (lysosomes) and the transport of substances.
Vesicles
tiny membrane-bound organelles containing various substances.
Cell wall 2
the outermost part of a plant cell.
