COL| Elements and Compounds Flashcards
1
Q
ORGANIC MOLECULES:
What are Biomolecules?
A
Biomolecules are sources of large molecules needed for life.
2
Q
ORGANIC MOLECULES:
Name 6 Biomolecules.
A
- Carboydrates
- Proteins/peptides
- Enzymes
- Lipids/fats
- Nucleic Acids
- Vitamins
3
Q
ORGANIC MOLECULES:
Give 4 properties of Organic Molecules.
A
- They originate from living organisms
- They cantain large amounts of Carbon
- They are usually large and complicated
- They burn in oxygen and release CO2
4
Q
INORGANIC COMPOUNDS:
Give 4 properties of Inorganic compounds.
A
- Does not have a living origin
- Does not contain carbon
- Is an element or simple molecule
- Does not burn in oxygen
5
Q
COL:
What is a monomer?
A
A monomer is a building block; usually referring to some type of “block” that makes up something larger.
6
Q
ORGANIC MOLECULES:
Give the Carbohydrate’s function and it’s monomer.
A
- Monomer = Monosaccharide
- Carbohydrate function = Major fast energy source for organisms. e.g. Stored as starch in plants and glycogen in animals
7
Q
ORGANIC MOLECULES:
Give the Lipid’s function and it’s monomer.
A
- Is a very diverse group, does not have a particular monomer. Monomers are usually glycerol and fatty acids.
- Lipid Function = Major source of long-term stored energy. They are also important for different types of insulation.
8
Q
ORGANIC MOLECULES:
Give the Protein’s function and it’s monomer.
A
- Protein Monomer = Amino acid
- Protein Function = Makes up all kinds of structers and are found in cell membranes as protein carriers.
9
Q
ORGANIC MOLECULES:
Give the Nucleic Acid’s function and it’s monomer.
A
- Nucleic acid Monomer = Nucleotide
- Nucleic acid Function = Carries DNA and RNA
