Organelle Practice Flashcards
Cell Theory
All organisms are made of cells
All cells are made by other living cells
The cell is the most basic unit of life
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like substance filling the extra space inside the cell membrane
Eukaryotic Cell
Cell containing a nucleus and other membrane bound organelles
Plants, animals, fungi, and protozoa have this type of cell
Prokaryotic Cell
No Nucleus or other membrane bound organelles
Bacteria and Archaea have this cell type
Cytoskeleton
Organelles that provides cell shape and strength plus helps in dividing DNA
Nucleus
Stores, protects, and make available DNA (instructions) for the rest of the cell to function properly.
Nucleolus
Found inside the nucleus and creates ribosomes
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Supports the production of proteins by ribosomes which are attached to the walls of this organelle
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Organelle that makes lipids and breaks down alcohol/drugs
Ribosomes
Make proteins by linking together amino acids
Golgi apparatus
Processes, sorts, and delivers proteins either throughout the cell or out of the cell membrane
Vesicles
Membrane-bound transport sacs that facilitate movement of molecules through the cell
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell
Contains its own DNA
Vacuoles
Storage of water, foods, ions, and enzymes
Central Vacuole
Plant only; Stores water and provides cell structure
