organ systems & functions Flashcards
what are the 11 organ systems?
endocrine, respiratory, disgestive, cardiovascular, urinary, reproductive, nervous, muscular, skeletal, integumentary, lymphatic
nervous system
rapidly controls & coordinates activities of the body based on sensory information from the environment; maintains short-term homeostasis
respiratory system
get rid of excess CO2 from internal environment and to provide O2 to internal environment (ex: lungs, trachea); contributes to maintenance of acid-base balance of body
cardiovascular system
transport blood around the body, allowing cells to receive essential supplies (nutrients, O2) and remove waste products; protection (clotting & antibodies)
digestive system
to receive, digest, absorb food & eliminate some wastes; breaks down macromolecules into polymers and excretes undigested residue as feces
lymphatic system
(immune) drainage of tissue fluid and protection of the body from infection; cleanses blood of pathogens and houses immune cells
urinary system
filter waste out of the blood and maintain water & electrolyte balance of internal environment
reproductive system
produce germ cells for propagation of species (male); produce germ cells and house developing fetus during gestation (female)
endocrine system
promotes growth & development, regulates long-term homeostasis
skeletal system
support, protection of soft tissue, allows movement to occur, site for blood formation, mineral storage
integumentary system
protect the body, maintain temperature, excrete salt & urea, senses, synthesizes & stores nutrients
muscular system
produce movement by shortening and pulling on bones; generate heat
