Organ System Overview Flashcards
Integumentary system:
Skin, hair, sweat glands, nails; protects against environment, regulates temp, provides sensory information
Skeletal system:
Bones, cartilage, ligaments, bone marrow; support and protection for other tissues, stores calcium and other minerals, forms blood cells
Muscular system:
Skeletal muscle, tendons; provides movement, support and protection, generates body heat/maintains body temp
Nervous system:
Brain, spinal chord, nerves, sense organs; immediate response to stimuli, coordinates activities of other systems, provides/interprets sensory info
Endocrine system:
Pituitary gland, thyroid gland, pancreas, adrenal gland, gonads, endocrine tissues; long term changes and activities, adjusts metabolic activity and energy, controls structural and functional changes
Cardiovascular system:
Heart, blood, blood vessels; distributes blood cells, water, minerals/nutrients, waste products, oxygen, carbon dioxide, assist body temp
Lymphatic system:
Spleen, thymus, lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, tonsils; defends against infection and disease, returns tissue fluids to bloodstreams
Respiratory system:
Nasal cavity, sinuses, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs, alveoli; delivers air, provides oxygen, removes carbon dioxide, produces sound for communication
Digestive system:
Teeth, tongue, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, Small intestine, large intestine, liver, gallbladder, pancreas; processes food, absorbs water and nutrients, stores energy
Urinary system:
Kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra; excretes waste, controls water balance, stores urine, regulates blood pH
Male reproductive system:
Testes, epididymides, ducts deferentia, serminal vesicles, prostate gland, penus, scrotum; produces make sex cells (sperm), suspending fluids, hormones, sexual intercourse
Female reproductive system:
Ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, vagina, labia, clitoris, mammary glands; produces female sex cells (oocytes), and hormones; supports developing embryo, provides milk, sexual intercourse
Organ systems:
Each system responsible for a specific function
