Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
Tissue
A group of similar cells working together to accomplish a specific function
Epithelial tissue (epithelia)
Covers exposed surfaces
Connective tissues
Provides structural support
Muscle tissue
Contracts to produce active movement
Neural tissue
Conducts electrical impulses
Free surface
Where cells are exposed
Avascular
Do not contain blood vessels
Basal lamina (basement membrane)
Attaches epithelium to body
Stem cells
Produces new cells
Simple epithelium
A single layer of cells and provides a thin surface for exchange of materials
Stratified epithelium
Protect against friction, prevent dehydration, keeps invaders from entering body
Transitional epithelium
Kind of stratified epithelium with cells of many shapes allow tissue to stretch and recoil
Pseudostratified epithelium
All cells touch basal lamina (basement membrane) but cells grow at different lengths
Squamous
Irregularly Shaped, flat, scale like. Either for protection or secretion/diffusion
Cuboidal
Cubic and have large nucleus
Columnar
Taller than they are wide
Goblet cells
Secrete mucus to coat and protect the epithelia
Simple squamous epithelium
Thin tissue that appears as a sheet of cells
Mesothelium
Tissues of serous membranes
Endothelium
Tissues of lining of blood vessels and heart chambers
Simple cuboidal epithelium
Lines kidney tubules, the thyroid and other glands, and ducts
Simple columnar epithelium
Lines most of the digestive tract, uterine tubes, and renal collecting ducts
Stratified epithelia
Multilayered tissues
Stratified squamous epithelium
Forms the superficial region of the skin (epidermis)
