Oral surgery: Extraction Techniques Flashcards
How can we identify what teeth we want to extract
dental probing and investigating
X-rays
how do you release the gingival attachment
use scalpel
push down gingiva till feel bone- all the way round the tooth
WHta are the aims of elevation of tooth
break down the peridontal ligament fibres
and slightly expand alveolus
what do lucatiors do to periodontal ligament
cut the PDL fibres
what do elevators do to the periodontal ligament
fatigue PDL fibres
expand alveolus
what do we need to do for all multi rooted teeth when trying to extract
section them
List the principles of a simple/ close tooth extraction
No flap, No bone removal- can be used for single rooted teeth or mobile teeth
what should you do before doing any extractions
scale all the teeth
flush the mouth
chlorhexidine prep
at what point should you move from a simple to surgical tooth extraction
when you have spent 5 mins and not gained any movement
What analgesia should you provide when doing dentals
opiates
NSAIDs
local anaesthesia
Post-op paracetamol can be useful for dogs
when should we use Abs following dental extractions
if there was severe infection or if the animal is systemically unwell
what are the 2 extraction techniques
simple extraction
surgical extraction
how to do a simple extraction
use a number 15 blade to cut around the tooth in the sulcus - this breaks down the attachments, use a combination of luxators and elevators to break down the PDL, keep working until the tooth is able to be removed
How can you section teeth
using a drill to cut a diamond shape out of the tooth going down to the bifurcation
Decsribe a surgical extraction
surgical flap created, bone removal done - can be done for multi-rooted or immobile teeth
