Oral - Gold Seal Flashcards
What flight time can be logged as Instrument time?
When the pilot operates the aircraft only by reference to instruments (actual or simulated)
What are the elements of 6HITS?
- 6 instrument approaches
- Holds (plural, so at least 2)
- Intercepted & Tracked a course
- Using Nav systems)
In the grace period (> 6 months, < 12 months) who can the 6HITS be done with.
- Safety pilot
- CFI or Examiner
What are the requirements to be a Safety pilot.
- Private pilot certificate (doesn’t ned to be current)
- Rated in the same Cat & Class
- Current medical
- Aircraft must have dual controls
- Visibility of front and side of aircraft
What is the acronym for the personal pre-flight assessment?
I - illness
M - medication
S - stress
A - alcohol (no drink within 8 hrs or 0.04 blood alcohol concentration)
F - fatigue
E - emotion
What preflight info’ must be obtained for every flight?
N - notams
W- weather
K - known delays
R - runway lengths
A - alternates
F - fuel requirements
P - performance data
What is the memory aid for required VFR equipment?
ATOMATOFLAMES
Airspeed indicator
Tachometer (each engine air cooled)
Oil pressure gauge (each air-cooled engine)
Manifold press gauge (for each engine)
Altimeter
Temperature gauge (liq cooled engine only)
Oil temperature gauge (air cooled engine)
Fuel gauge (each tank)
Landing gear position indicator
Anti collision lights (cert after 3/11/96)
Magnetic compass
ELT
Safety belts
In which regulation are the requirements for obtaining an IR?
§ 61.65 Instrument rating requirements.
What requirements must be met to allow a pilot to carry passengers?
3 takeoffs and full stop landings in the previous 90 days. Same category and classs of aircraft.
If carrying passengers at night, these must have been achieved at night!
What is meant by the pre-flight acronym - P A V E
Pilot
Aircraft
EnVironment
External factors
‘P’ - what does this encompass
P A V E - go/no go
pilot - has the required documents, physical and mental state, and currency.
‘A’ - what does this encompass
P A V E - go/no go
aircraft - required and current documents and equipment on board.
‘V’ - what does this encompass
P A V E - go/no go
weather
‘E’ - what does this encompass
P A V E - go/no go
External pressure (meetings, people waiting at destination, etc.) -pilot recognizes the factors that may add risk to the flight.
91.205
What’s the minimum equipment needed for a VFR flight at night?
F - fuses
L - landing light
A - anticollision lights
P - position lights
S - source of powere
91.205
What is GRABCARD used for?
Lists all equipment needed for IFR (in addition to VFR equipment and F L A P S if at night).
What is a ‘Clearnance void time’?
Time at which an IFR clearance becomes void and you may not take off.
If not departed, advise ATC within 30 mins after void time.
What is a Release time?
Earliest time the aircraft can depart under IFR
Name the 2 types of DP (Departure Procedure)
ODP - only provides obstacle clearance (textual or graphical)
SID - provides obstacle clearance using a route to reduce pilot & controller workload (always graphical)
With respect to planning (destination and alternate) what benefit does a WAAS GPS give?
With a WAAS enabaled GPS you get use airports that only have RNAV approaches
If the GPS isn’t WAAS enabled an RNAV app can be at dest’ OR Alternate.
What are ‘standard’ alternate minimums?
ceiling and visibility
Precision - 2 sm, 600 ft ceiling
Non precision - 2 sm, 800 ft ceiling
No Instrument App - descend to MEA and land VFR
Charts
What’s an MRA used for?
The altitude that enables an intersection to be identified.
if higher than MEA then the MRA needs to be used.
Charts
what is the MOCA
Minimum obstruction clearance - provides nav coverage up to 22nm from the station
Charts
A ‘T’ in the info section of a VOR indicates what?
It’s a terminal VOR, service volume: 1,000-12,000 ft / radial distance: 25 nm
Charts
If the frequency in a VOR box is underlined what does this tell us?
That there is no voice capability
Reporting
Name 3 times when IFR reporting is mandatory
- Executing a missed approach
- TAS (actual vs filed) differs by 5% or 10 kts
- Reaching a holding fix (time, altitude)
approach
Name 3 times when a procedure turn isn’t authorised.
- Straight in approach
- “NO PT” is published on the chart
- Cleared for a straight in approach.
Holding
You reach a holding fix, what do you need to report to ATC?
Time and altitude upon reaching.
Holding
How many minutes prior to arriving at the holding fix should you slow down to the holding speed?
3 mins
ILS
Localizer full scale deflection at threshold is how many feet?
700 ft
ILS
At 10nm what is the localizer fan size in degrees?
35°
ILS
At 18nm what is the localizer fan size in degrees?
10°
Approach
Aircraft approach category is based on?
Reference landing speed (VREF), or
if VREF is not specified, 1.3 VSO
Category of aircraft
Category A speed?
< 91 kts
Category of aircraft
Category B speed?
91-120 kts
Category of aircraft
Category C speed?
121 - 140 kts
Circling
How much (ft) obstacle clearance is provided
in a circling segment.
