Oral cavity, Tongue, Salivary glands and Palate Flashcards
Vestibule
space between the cheek and the gum in the mouth; cavity lying outside the teeth and guns and inside the lips and cheeks; ducts of the parotid and zygomatic salivary gland open into the dorsocaudal part of the vestibule
Opening of the parotid duct
through the cheek on a small papilla located opposite the caudal end of the superior fourth premolar or shearing tooth
Oral cavity
lies within the arcade of teeth in the mouth
bounded dorsally by the hard palate and a small part of the adjacent soft palate; laterally and rostrally by the by the dental arches; ventrally by the tongue and adjacent mucosa; caudal boundary ventrally is the body of the tongue at the palatoglossal arch
Palatoglossal arch
ridge of tissue from the body of the tongue to the soft palate
Tongue divisions
Root: caudal third (caudal to palatoglossal arch)
Body: long, slender, rostral part of the tongue (palatoglossal arch to lingual frenulum)
Apex: free extremity of the tongue
Types of papillae on the tongue (taste buds)
Filiform- in the spaces between the fungiform papillae (body/apex)
Fungiform- mushroom tops (body/apex)
Vallate- at the back of tongue, large and round (junction of body and root)
Foliate- most lateral, near palatoglossal arch (root)
Conical- surround the vallate papillae (root)
Lingual frenulum
tongue attachment to the rostral aspect of the floor of the oral cavity; fold of mucosa
Lyssa
fusiform fibrous spicule extends from the apex to the level of attachment of the frenulum
Sublingual caruncle
slightly raised elevation of mucosa that is lateral to the rostral part of the frenulum and protrudes from the floor of the oral cavity
Sublingual fold
extension caudally of the sublingual caruncle
Mandibular salivary duct/gland
duct: found in the sublingual fold; course rostrally to open on or beside the sublingual caruncle, separately or through a common opening
gland: lateral side of the head just caudal to the angle of the mandible, where it lies between the maxillary and linguofacial veins; covered by a thick capsule that also includes the caudal part of the monostomatic sublingual gland
Major sublingual salivary duct/gland
duct: found in the sublingual fold; course rostrally to open on or beside the sublingual caruncle, separately or through a common opening
gland: roughly triangular, sits on the rostral end of the mandibular salivary gland
Parotid salivary duct/gland
duct: formed by two or three converging radicles, unite and leave the rostral border of the gland; grooves the lateral surface of the masseter muscle as it passes to the cheek; opens into the vestible on a small papilla at the level of the caudal margin of the superior fourth premolar
gland: lies between the mandibular gland and the ear; closely applied to the base of the auricular cartilage of the ear
Incisive papilla
located just caudal to the central incisor teeth; fissue on either side of this papilla is the oral opening into the incisive duct
Incisive duct
fissue on either side of the incisive papilla is the oral opening of the duct; passes through the palatine fissues and opens into the ventral nasal meatus; extending caudally from the incisive duct, close to its entrance into the nasal cavity, is the vomeronasal organ
