Explain the procedure/indications for cystotomy

finish

A

Procedure: incision into ventral aspect of the bladder (use suction, expect urine to shoot out of bladder since it’s a high pressure system)
Indications: bladderstone removal (no stones lodged further in the urethra), resection of bladder cancer, repair of bladder trauma
Animal is usually back to 100% in 5 days

Explain the indications/procedure in an urethrostomy

finish

A

indications: bladder stone lodged in the os penis (males) or further along the urethra that cannot be dislodged; male urinary obstruction 3 strike rule
procedure:
cats:
dogs: more common in males due to stones being lodged in the os penis; initial incision is pre-scrotal/scrotal; urinary cather is passed to the urethra to a point closest to the skin caudally along the urinary tract
