Nasal Cavity and Parts Flashcards
Nasal aperature
bony part of the nasal cavity begins; composed of 2 symmetrical halves; separated by the median nasal septum
Chonanae
caudal openings of the two halves of the nasal cavity;
at the caudal end of the nasal septum where the cavity opens into the nasopharynx
Dorsal nasal concha
originates as the most dorsal scroll on the cribiform plate and extends rostrally as a shelf attached along the medial surface of the nasal bone
Ventral nasal concha
several elongated scrolls that attach to a crest on the medial surface of the maxilla lies in the middle of the nasal cavity but does not come into contact with the median nasal septum
Nasal septum
separates the right and left nasal cavities composed of cartilage and bone
cartilage: forms rostral 2/3 of median partition
bony: formed by the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone, septal processes of frontal/nasal bones, sagittal portion of the vomer
Dorsal nasal meatus
lies between the nasal bone and the dorsal nasal concha
Middle nasal meatus
lies between the dorsal nasal concha and the ventral nasal concha
Ventral nasal meatus
dorsal to the hard palate; between hard palate and the ventral nasal concha
Common nasal meatus
space formed on each side of the nasal septum; extends from the nasal aperature to the choanae in a longitudinal direction and from the nasal bone to the hard palate in a vertical direction
