What are the two portions of the oral cavity?

A
  • vestibule, above second molar
  • oral cavity proper = bounder by the alveolar arches, communicates posteriorly with the oropharynx by an opening termed the faucial isthmus between the palatoglossal arches

What is a T4 oral cancer ?

A
  • a = invades through cortical bone, inf alveolar nerve, floor of mouth, skin of chin or nose(lip)
  • b tumour invades masticator space or encases internal carotid artery

What are the surgical options for OC cancer?

A
  • Primary aim is surgical clearance of 1cm
  • Transoral resection
  • PDT
  • Conventional strategy
  • Sentinel lymph node biopsy
  • elective neck disection

When is RT used in OC cancer?

A
  • Primary chemoRT is less common, would be 3 x weekly cisplatin
  • Neo-adj chemo would be taxane, cicplatin and 5FUfollowed by chemoRT (in advanced or inoperable cases)
  • Primary RT not recommended
  • post-op chemoRT in unfavourable disease factors
  • If no neck disection, prophylactic neck RT
  • Adj RT if +ve or close margins
  • Radical will be around 60-70Gy in 35#
