- More specific than an endoscopy
- Used if it will give better information that will help to inform management options

- To determine histology

A
- to identify patients suitable for radical treatment
- finds N and M stage

A
- To rule out peritoneal disease which is present in 15% of patients with lower tumours.

A
- fine needle aspiration taken under guidance of an endoscopic ultrasound

A
- Offered to patients with metastatic oesophago-gastric disease
