What is an OD?
A primary health care professional for the eye. ODs examine, diagnose, treat, and manage disease, injuries, and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures as well as identify related system conditions affecting the eye.
What do OD’s prescribe?
Medications, low vision rehabilitation, vision therapy, spectacle lenses, contact lenses, and certain surgical procedures
What is the art and the science of optometry?
Art: compassion, effective care, applying evidence based approaches to each patient and tailoring the approach to their needs
Science: the function of the visual system and the human body as a whole
What are the four basics of optometry?
1) legislated profession
2) primary health care
3) limited in scope
4) comprehensive in liability
Who is in a primary care team?
Family medicine, internists, pediatricians, OBGYNs, Dentists, Optometrists
When were optometrists recognized as physicians?
April 1987 in Medicare, signed by President Reagan w/ Mikulski amendment
When was optometry recognized as a primary care discipline?
March 2010 in the Affordable Care Act
What are the two aspects of primary eye care?
Vision care and eye health care
What comprises vision care?
refractive care: glasses, CL, refractive surgery
functional vision care: binocularity, VT, occupational needs
What comprises eye health care?
eye diseases: high blood pressure, diabetes, ocular diseases, ocular infection, and injuries
What are optometric “specialties”?
Ocular disease, CL, pediatrics, low vision, binocular/developmental vision (may have 1 year residency)
What is sight?
The ability of the eye anatomy to work
What is vision?
The process of seeing; experientially learned
What is the primary purpose of the visual system?
The derivation of meaning and the direction of action
How does optometry differ from medicine?
Origin: jeweler vs barber
Legality: separated in the early 20th century
Purpose: prevention vs fix it
Science: physical science vs biological science
