What is optic neuritis?
An inflammatory condition that affects the optic nerve.
Role of optic nerve?
transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain
Typical presentation of optic neuritis?
- sudden onset vision loss
- pain on eye movement
- changes in colour perception
- RAPD
What condition is optic neuritis commonly associated with?
MS
note - can also occur as an isolated event or in association with other autoimmune disorders.
Mx of optic neuritis?
Steroids to reduce inflammation
Symptomatic mx
What is the hallmark symptom of optic neuritis?
Acute, unilateral visual loss
The severity may vary from mild to severe impairment or even complete loss of vision in the affected eye.
What colour perception is particularly affected in optic neuritis?
Red-green discrimination.
What is Uhthoff’s phenomenon?
A transient worsening of visual symptoms with increased body temperature due to exercise, hot showers, or fever.
Often seen in optic neuritis.
