Opposition To Henry VII Flashcards
Who were Yorkists?
Supporters of the house of York.
They were not satisfied with Henry’s marriage to Elizabeth.
Included claimants Earl of Warwick and and Lincoln.
They pretended to be the ‘Princes in the tower’
Who was Margaret Burgandy?
Edward IV and Richard III’s sister.
She had funds which allowed her to encourage Yorkist rebellions.
Who was Viscount Lovell?
He started the first minor rebellion against Henry in 1486.
When this rebellion failed (due to lack of support from Yorkists) Stafford was executed and Lovell fled to the Netherlands.
Who was John de la Pole?
A Yorkist claimant
He came up with the idea to pass Simnel off as the Earl of Warwick.
When this failed he fled to The Netherlands to stay with Margret of Burgandy and Lovell.
They convinced Margret to fund an invasion and support Simnel’s claim.
He was killed at the battle of Stoke Field because he didn’t have enough support.
Who was Lambert Simnel?
He impersonated the Earl of Warwick (the future king of Ireland).
When this failed, he fled to Ireland and became the king in May 1487.
Simnel joined John de la Pole’s rebellion.
They lost the Battle or Stoke Field in, Henry pardoned Simnel.
When was the Battle of Stoke Field?
1487
How did Henry get support for the Battle of Stoke Field?
The most rebellious area was the North of England.
To neutralise this area, Henry reinstated the Earl of Northumberland who was popular in the North but untrustworthy.
This also ensured that the traditionally Yorkist Howard family had no intention of joining the rebellion (Northumberland was a descendant of them).
Where was the Battle of Stoke Field?
East Stoke in Nottinghamshire
What were the outcomes of the Battle of Stoke Field?
Henry VII won the battle
He treated the Yorkists who fought against him fairly which earned him their support.
Who was Perkin Warbeck?
He pretended to be Richard, Duke of York.
Margret Beaufort trainee him to be a Yorkist Prince.
He attracted patronage from foreign rulers which was a threat to Henry VII.
Describe Perkin Warbeck’s 3 invasion attempts of Enagland?
1495- Attempted to invade England with help from Sir William Stanley, he failed and fled to Scotland.
He attempted to invade again with James IV of Scotland but Henry VII offered James marriage to his daughter so Scotland and England were united.
1497- Failed again and surrendered to Henry.
What happened after Perkin Warbeck surrendered to Henry VII?
He was confined in the Tower of London.
He attempted to escape with the Earl of Warwick.
They were both caught, accused of treason and executed.
This was very convenient for Henry as he could get rid of the Earl of Warwick without looking tyrannical.
Who was Edmund de la Pole
Earl of Suffolk
Younger brother of John de la Pole
He fled to the court of the Emperor Maximilian in 1501.
The Treaty of Windsor in 1506 meant that Maximilian agreed to give up Suffolk .
Henry executed him in 1513.
Who was Richard de la Pole?
Nicknamed the ‘white rose’.
He was in exile but still a threat to Henry VII.
However, he was killed in the Battle of Pavia in 1525, so he was no longer an issue.
