OPIOIDS Flashcards
OPIOIDS
codeine hydrocodone hydrocodone w/ acetaminophen (Vicodin) morphine (MS Contin) oxycodone (Oxycontin) oxycodone w/ acetaminophen (Percocet) fentanyl (Duragesic) hydromorphone (Dilaudid) meperidine (Dermerol) tramadol methadone
OPIOIDS INDICATION
Codeine: antitussive, analgesia
everything else: analgesia
OPIOIDS ROA
PO, rectal, IM, IV, topical, subcut, epidural, intrathecal, intranasal, transmucosal
OPIOIDS MOA
bind opioid receptors in the CNS to inhibit ascending pain pathways
OPIOIDS AE
CNS effects: *sedation, *nausea, respiratory depression, cough suppression, miosis, trunk rigidity
Peripheral effects: *constipation, urinary retention, bronchospasm, reduced GI motility, pruitis
OPIOIDS PT SPECIFIC CONSIDERATIONS
HYDROCODONE: maximize PT scheduling to maximize pain relief, be aware of fall risk
FENTANYL: w/ patched avoid heating the patch
OPIOIDS OTHER
CODEINE: opiods most effective in treating mod-severe constant pain; not as effective for sharp intermittent pain
