What is an opioid induction?

A
  • The use of a benzodiazepine and an ultrashort acting opioid (fentanyl / remifentanyl)
  • given IV until intubation is achieved
  • Benefits hemodynamically unstable patients or moribund (near death) patients
  • due to minimal cardiovascular depression caused
  • not a good choice for healthy patients
  • rough induction
  • intubation not possible unless with another agent
  • pre-oxygenation highly recommended for 3-5mins prior
  • replace functional residual capacity of lungs with 100% oxygen instead of 21% oxygen
  • prolong onset of hypoxemia
  • quiet place
  • hypersensitivity common
