- The use of a benzodiazepine and an ultrashort acting opioid (fentanyl / remifentanyl)
- given IV until intubation is achieved
- Benefits hemodynamically unstable patients or moribund (near death) patients
- due to minimal cardiovascular depression caused
- not a good choice for healthy patients
- rough induction
- intubation not possible unless with another agent
- pre-oxygenation highly recommended for 3-5mins prior
- replace functional residual capacity of lungs with 100% oxygen instead of 21% oxygen
- prolong onset of hypoxemia
- quiet place
- hypersensitivity common
