Ophthalmoscopy Flashcards
How thick is the cornea?
0.5mm
What are the layers of the cornea
OUTSIDE
1 Epithelium (several cells thick)
2 Bowman’s membrane
3 Stroma (made of collagen)
4 Descemet’s membrane
5 Endothelium (1 cell thick, never regrows which maintains dehydration)
ANTERIOR CHAMBER
What is the refractive index of the cornea?
40 dioptres
What specialist cells does the conjunctiva contain?
mucin-secreting goblet cells
What are the layers of the iris?
1) stoma = contains sphincter pupillae muscle and determines colour of iris
2) Pigment epithelium contians a greater amount of pigment and the dilator pupillae
What are the functions of the ciliary body?
aqueous secretion
accommodation
influences aqueous outflow
What is the function of the retinal pigmented epithelium?
provides
functional and
metabolic
support for the photoreceptors
What is the uvea?
The iris, ciliary body, and choroid collectively.
What is the membrane called between the choroid and retina?
Bruch’s membrane
What is the blood supply to the retina
Central 2/3rds is retinal blood vessels
Outer 1/3 is choroidal blood vessels
Why is the optic nerve thicker outside the orbit?
It is myelinated
