Preparation
A
Darken the room
Dilate the pupil with mydriatic eye drops (done for you)
Ask the patient to fixate on a distant object

Assess red reflex

Assessing for a red reflex
A
Shoulder distance from patient
Look through ophthalmascope (make sure its actually at your eye)
Observe for a orange/red reflexion from the pupil

What is the red reflex caused by?
A
Light reflecting back off the vascularised retina

Lack of red reflex suggests
A
Cataracts in adults (or more rare: retinoblastoma)

After checking red reflex you…
A
Get in closer with the ophthalmascope (but warn the patient first)
