True leg length
From ASIS to medial malleolus
Apparent leg length
Xiphisternum to medial malleolus
Palpation
Greater trochanter
ASIS to groin
Movements
Flexion (active and passive)
Thomas’ test
Internal and external rotation
Abduction/adduction
Movements are done on both or just one side?
Thomas’ test just on one side
the rest on both sides
On movements with which leg do you start?
Normal
Thomas’ test
Place hand under lumbar lordosis
Ask patient to pull contralateral leg up in flexion, watch for ‘injured’ leg to stay flat on bed
