Operations Management- CAD CAM Flashcards
1
Q
What is computer aided design
A
This involves the use of computer programs to create two or more graphical representatives of physical objects.
Different to CAM as this is a computer software that helps with the manufacturing of components
E.g computer animations
2
Q
Advantages of CAD?
A
- Improved productivity hence faster time to the market
- It is an accurate program which leads to the same product being produced hence maintains accuracy and quality
- Good visualization of the product being produced and seeing it goodness, which can be later on used for other design products
3
Q
Disadvantages of CAD?
A
- It requires large initial capital investment and retraining of employees
- May have redundancies which is bad reputation
- Employees may become demotivated as its more the machine doing the work than them
4 hardware may fail

Q
Computer aided manufacturing
A
This is a computer sofywate that aids with the production process of the manufacturing of goods or services or components to other firms.
Different to CAD as this involves creating not helping
E.g robots
5
Q
Advantages of CAM
A
- Faster production rate and increased labour productivity as more are being produced. MORE FLEXIBLE allows quick changeover from one product to another
- Quality is maintained so more accuracy of production as less alterations occurring
- More design variants of a product to be produced, hence this increased customization leads to an increase in competitiveness of business
6
Q
Disadvantages of CAM
A
- Training employees
- Hardware failure
- Increases business costs due to computer processing power
