The UK’s contribution to the US led coalition against Daesh, operation inherent resolve.
What does operation Shader involve?
The UK’s support includes: ISTAR, Airstikes, humanitarian relief, and the training of Iraqi & Kurdish forces.
Operation Shader: when did the UK conduct its first airstrikes against Daesh?
December 2015, on Omar Oil Fields - A large income source for ISIS
What 3 important things happened in 2019?
- March: Daesh’s final holding posts were liberated by SDF
- Oct: US began pulling forces from northern Syria, 500 will remain to guard oil facilities
- Oct: Al-baghdadi detonated suicide vest whilst been pursued by delta force.
- Dec: A possible resurgence - attacks by the fractured “caliphate” intensify

What is operation Toral?
The UK’s post 2014 presence in Afghanistan, in support of NATO’s Resolute support mission
What does operation Toral involve? (Both UK & RAF)
UK forces have two major tasks: 1) Training and mentoring Afghan forces 2) providing force protection for NATO advisers.
The RAF’s contribution involves providing life-saving air transport to NATO troops and visiting dignitaries around Kabul via the three Puma’s that were deployed in 2015 to replace the chinooks that formally carried out the role.

What is operation Newcombe?
The UK’s British military assistance to France’s counter-insurgency operation (Barkhane - following Serval) in Mali.
What are the aims or Op Barkhane (Parent to Newcombe)
Two fold:
1) Help the Sahel nations maintain control of their territory - which was re-gained through Op Serval
2) Prevent the region from becoming a save haven for Islamic terrorist organisations planning to attack Europe & France.
