What is operation SHADER?
The UK’s contribution to the US-led coalition against Daesh - operation INHERENT RESOLVE
- The UK’s involvement included:
- The training of ~89,000 Iraqi and Kurdish forces
personnel - The supply of heavy machine guns and ammunition
- Airstrikes
- The gaining of supply of vital intelligence
- Surveillance (Reaper responsible for 30% of all
surveillance over Syria)

- UK’s first airstrikes were conducted in December 2015
since then the RAF has conducted over 1000 that has
resulted in the neutralisation or injury of 4315
insurgents. However, also the death of one civilian
which of course is tragic but the risks of war cannot be
full averted and compared to the 1200+ deaths as a
result of American-led airstrikes this clearly shows
appropriate diligence was given in reducing the risk as
much as possible. - The final cities held by the terrorist group were
liberated this year. Subsequent operations have
involve ISTAR missions to provide information to
ground-based forces

The RAF’s involvement includes:
- Air transport
* The Globemaster SAT aircraft has flown around
5000-mile round trips on an almost daily basis;
transporting armourd vehicles, personnel and
freight in support of the French op.
- Deployment of Chinooks for logistical and troop
movement support
- Reportedly also involved the use of Sentinel R1 for
surveillance
