Q

What is the relationship between automation and configuration?

A
  • Companies that need high volumes of relatively standard services or products configure their operations to be more automated
  • Companies that need low volumes of unique services or products would configure their operations to be less automated, using more people with lots of locations that are relatively small

Q

What is a bottleneck?

A

1) Rate limiting step of the process, can go no faster than the bottleneck
2) it is the resource with utilization at 100%, always working
3) sets maximum output, you can do no more work than the bottleneck

Q

5 misunderstandings

A
  • variance makes everything worse
  • confusing start to finish with cycle time
  • confusing design capacity with effective capacity
  • adding capacity to a non bottleneck will not increase the throughput of a system
  • doubling capacity at the bottleneck will not double the capacity of a system
