Operation and importance of hydrological cycle. Flashcards
Define Flux.
Rate of flow between stores.
Define Cryosphere.
Areas of earth where water is frozen into snow or ice.
Define Blue water.
Water thats stored in rivers, streams, lakes and groundwater in liquid form.
Define Green water.
Water stored in the soil and vegetation.
Define Residence time.
The average time a water molecule will spend in a resevoir or store.
Define stem flow.
The water trickles down stem, then branches, then trunk.
Define Orographic rainfall.
Concentrated on the windward slopes and summits of mountains.
Define PEVT.
(Potential evapotranspiration) Water loss that would occur if there was an unlimited amount of water in the soil for use by vegetation.
Define Afforestation
The planting of trees in an area that has not been forested in recent times.
Define EVT.
(Evapotranspiration) The combined effect of evaporation and transpiration.
Define Albedo.
Measuring the proportion of incoming solar radiation reflected by the surface back into the atmosphere.
Define River regime.
The annual variation in discharge or flow of a river at a particular point or gauging station.
Define Peak discharge.
When the river reaches its highest flow.
Define Lag time.
Time interval between peak rainfall and peak discharge.
