OPERANT CONDITIONING BY:B.F SKINNER Flashcards
This theory should focus on the external, observable causes of behaviour(rather than try to unpack the internal thoughts and motivations.)
✓ reward and punishment
OPERANT CONDITIONING
Increase or strengthens the behaviour
Reinforcement
ADDING something POSITIVE to INCREASE a response.
Ex. A mother gives her son praise (positive stimulus) for doing assignments (behavior)
Positive Reinforcement
TAKING /REMOVING something NEGATIVE away to INCREASE a response.
Ex. Bob does the dishes (behavior) in order to AVOID his mother NAGGING (negative stimulus)
Negative Reinforcement
Decreases or Weakens the behavior
Punishment
ADDING a negative consequence after an undesired behavior is emitted to decrease future responses.
Ex. A child grabe a toy from another child (behavior) and is sent to time out (negative stimulus)
Positive Punishment
TAKING AWAY/REMOVING a certain desired item after the undesired behavior happens to decrease future responses.
Ex. Siblings fight over a toy (behavior), the parent takes the toy (desired stimulus)
Negative Punishment
