LEARNING OR SUBSUMPTION THEORY: DAVID AUSUBEL'S Flashcards
Theory make the learners sense of their surroundings by integrating new knowledge with that which they have already learned.
Subsumption Theory
4 processes of Meaning learning occur:
Derivative Subsumption
Correlative Subsumption
Superordinate Learning
Combinatorial Learning
The new information pupils learn is an instance or example of a concept that pupils have already learned.
Prior knowledge-concept
New knowledge example
Derivative Subsumption
Accommodate new information, you have to alter or expand your concept.
✓ example is more valuable as it has changes, alteration and expansion of knowledge.
Correlative Subsumption
The learner already knew a lot of example of the concept, but did not know the concept itself until it was taught to you.
✓ prior knowledge- example
✓ new knowledge - concept
Superordinate learning
It describes a process by which the new idea is derived from another idea that comes from his previous knowledge.
Ex. Human Respiration- Respiration in Plants (Anatomy-Botany)
Combinatorial learning
