operant conditioning Flashcards
antecedent
stimulus or event that precedes and often elicits a particular behaviour, allows the learner decided on a behaviour
eg. owners tells dog to sit
behaviour
voluntary action that occurs in the presence of antecedent
eg. dog sits in response
consequence
the outcome of the behaviour, which determines the likelihood that it will occur again
eg. gives dog a treat
positive reinforcement
applies a reward that is desired, to increase the likelihood of behaviour reoccurring
eg. getting a gold star
negative reinforcement
taking away the unpleasant stimulus
eg. taking panadol
positive punishment
apply an undesirable stimulus to decrease the likelihood of behaviour reoccurring
eg. made to run laps
negative punishment
taking away desirable stimulus, to decrease the likelihood of behaviour reoccurring
eg. taking away toys
how is punishment effective and ineffective?
punishment must be immediate, fit for crime (not too harsh or soft). Limitation: only teaches what’s wrong, not right.
