episodic and semantic memories in remembering Flashcards
autobiographical events
personally lived experiences
this type of memories contains both components of episodic and semantic memories
autobiographical event - birthday party, episodic components
- conversations with people
- feeling happy
- dancing to music
- taste of cake
autobiographical event - birthday party, semantic components
- location
- flavour of cake
- who was there
- music that was played
Alzheimers disease
a neurodegenerative disease that involves the progressive loss of neurons in the brain and is characterised by memory decline
Alzheimers effects on memory
first a damaged hippocampus
struggles to encode and consolidate explicit memories
new memories can not be encoded
Therefore they are not stored
and no explicit memories exist
more of the hippocampus becomes damaged
- less encoding
- retrieval of some episodic memories retrieved
overtime
neocortex effected
therefor retrieval is effected
why neurons die
amyloid plaques - inhibit communication
between neurons
neurofibrillary tangles - inhibit the transportation of essential substances and communication
aphantasia
individuals lack the capacity to generate mental imagery
person without aphantasia
use sensory info that has gone from STM to LTM to recreat perceptual experiences for mental imagery. Stored in semantic or episodic
person with aphantasia
cannot visualise detailed and vivid episodic memories due to inability to generate mental imagery. Semantic may be intact , however visual element may be lacking
