classical conditioning Flashcards
classical conditioning
process of learning through the involuntary and unconscious association between a neutral stimulus and unconditioned stimulus in a conditioned response
before conditioning
neutral stimulus (white rat) = no relevant response
unconditioned stimulus (loud noise) = unconditioned response (cries with fear)
during conditioning
NS (white rat) + UCS (loud noise) = unconditioned response (cries with fear)
after conditioning
conditioned stimulus (white rat) = conditioned response (cries with fear)
acquisition
the organism learns to associate the NS and the UCS
extinction
a decrease in the frequency of response.
The CS no longer produces CR, as the CS is repeatedly presented without UCS
stimulus generalisation
the tendency for similar stimuli to produce the same response
stimulus discrimination
the tendency to respond to the CS, but not other similar stimuli
spontaneous recovery
the reappearance of the CR to the CS after a period of extinction
learning
the process of acquiring knowledge skills or behaviours through experience
behaviourist approach to learning
theories that propose learning occurs by interacting with the external environment
neutral stimulus
no naturally occurring response
unconditioned stimulus
produces a naturally occurring response
unconditioned response
unlearned response to unconditioned stimulus
conditioned stimulus
produces a learned response
