What is Operant Conditioning?
A type of learning where the learner is active, the choice to learn is voluntary and the learner is involved in the learning.
What are the three phases of operant conditioning?
A-B-C
A - Antecedent/Discriminative Stimulus : Stimulus conditions or environment that exists in the area or environment prior to the response.
B - Behaviour: The action that the learner takes
C - Consequence: Result of actions
What are the different types of consequences?
Reinforcement and punishment
What is reinforcement?
Makes repetition of behaviour more likely
What are the two types of reinforcement?
Positive: something desired is given or applied. eg. lollies given or praise.
Negative: something unpleasant is taken away. eg. less or no homework, pain taken away.
What is punishment?
Makes repetition of something less likley
What are the two types of punishment?
Positive Punishment: something unpleasant is applied. eg. pain, labour.
Response Cost: something desired is taken away eg. Jail time ( freedom ), money ( fines ).
