Alzheimer's Disease Flashcards
What is a neurodegenerative disease?
Characterised by progressive loss of neurons in the brain
What is the order of affected areas when exposed to Alzheimer’s disease
The first part of the brain affected when exposed to alzheimer’s is the hypothalamus which is responsible for encoding and consolidating new explicit memory therefore new memories will not be able to be encoded and stored so you have no explicit memories.
Eventually overtime the neocortex is affected and that is where explicit memories are stored so retrieval of these memories will be affected. Implicit memories are not affected ( people don’t forget to walk ) until the very very end or only in extreme cases.
How does Alzheimer’s develop?
Either Neurofibrillary Tangles or Amyloid Plague
Neurofibrillary Tangles - Tangels in the axon
