OP Issues and Grading Flashcards
What should be considered when identifying OP issues?
Take medical issues and restrictions (physical, mental, cognitive and other) and translate them into performance (ie what can the client do, what cant they do and what do they need help with).
What are examples of OP issues in the workplace?
- Not able to load groceries at the checkout
- Not able to restock pet food aisle, but able to restock personal care/hygiene aisle
- Unable to hang washing on the line
What are examples of indicators for a GRTW Program?
- Partial medical clearance to return to work w/ modified duties
- Re-establish a usual work routine and behaviour
- Assistance to regain strength, endurance and dexterity to undertake pre-injury duties believed the worker can achieve post injury
- Asssistance in transference of skills, enable them to use safe and appropriate body mechanics and work practices in less demanding situation than normal work environment
- Claim is lodged and no time loss, but worker is unable to performance pre-injury duties
- Work trial
Why is return to work important?
- Cost to business (direct and indirect costs)
- Cost to individual
Describe occupation as means
- Use activity/occupation to improve body functions
- Improve either performance of that occupation, or develop capacities that can be used to assist in performance of other occupations
Describe occupation as ends
- Use activity/occupation as the end result
- About success, completion, engagement, participation
What is the Rehabilitation FOR?
- Enables a person to achieve maximum OP in his or her daily activities.
- Focus on individuals abilities (capacity)
- Draws on knowledge from medical, physical and social sciences
How can Rehabilitation FOR be applied for Occ. Rehab?
Through use daily living, work and leisure activities, performance can be:
1) Improved
2) Compensated for
3) Mediated, Adapted, Modified
What is the Biomechanical FOR?
- Occupation used to assess and treat joint and muscle function
1) Structural stability
2) Low level endurance
3) Oedema control
4) PROM
5) Strength
6) High level endurance
How can Biomechanical FOR be applied for Occ. Rehab?
1) Activity used to treat low ROM, strength, endurance
2) After ROM, strength, endurance improve, so does OP
3) Rest then stress
4) CNS must be intact
What are the 3 concepts of grading?
1) Grading the occupation up/down as a whole.
2) Grading the components of the occupation.
3) Grading demands arising from the environment.
What are the 4 principles of grading?
- Rate: complete whole occupation in less time
- Duration: spend longer at work each day
- Intensity: increase or decrease demands of occupation as whole
- Frequency: spend more days at work
What is energy conservation?
Energy conservation refers to the way things are done to minimise muscle fatigue, joint stress and pain.
What is work simplification?
Work simplification is the performance of tasks in the simplest way possible to conserve time and energy.
- Organise workspaces and equipment for maximum efficiency (avoid lifting)
- Sit down to do tasks where possible
