Describe anatomy of the spine
Intervertebral discs are cushions which act as shock absorbers between each vertebra in the spine.
-One disc between each vertebrae, with each disc having a strong ring of fibres on the outer layer to connect each vertebrae together
What is a herniated/bulging disc?
A herniated disc occurs when the intervertebral disc’s outer fibres are damaged and soft inner material ruptures out of its normal space.
What are signs and symptoms of lumbar disc bulge
- Pain that travels into one or both legs.
- Muscle weakness in certain muscles in one or both legs,
- Loss of reflexes in one or both legs.
- Radicular pain, sensory abnormalities, weakness in lumbosacral nerve roots
- Restricted trunk flexion and increases in leg pain with straining, coughing and sneezing
What is the role of occupational therapists with treating lumbar disc bulges?
-Instruction in proper body mechanics and safe performance of activities; task analysis; use of ergonomic design to modify environment; relaxation techniques; reconditioning; pain management and stress reduction or coping strategies.
