Oogenesis Flashcards
Control of gametogenesis in oogenesis?
Hypothalamus secretes GnRH
GnRH stimulates FSH and LH from anterior pituitary cells
FSH stimulates development of follicles and secretion of oestrogens
LH stimulates maturation of follicles and release of ova at ovulation
What are the basics of oogenesis?
Diploid primary oocyte turns into a secondary oocyte (which is haploid) and a polar body - after meiosis 1
Secondary oocyte and first polar body under meiosis 2 to form haploid ovum and 3 polar bodies
Ovum becomes egg to be fertilised - cytoplasm is conserved in secondary oocyte so only that becomes egg
What is the role of oestrogen in oogenesis?
Enhances growth of follicles and grows endometrium
What is the role of progesterone in oogenesis?
Grows and maintains endometrium for pregnancy
Secretes nutrients for embryo
What are the basics of fruit fly oogenesis?
Happens distal to proximal
Egg production starts in larvae
Eggs take a few days to mature
Released into uterus for fertilisation
Egg is laid even in not fertilised
Oviparous
