Mating Flashcards
What is broadcast spawning?
In non-motile animals:
Eggs and sperm are released into the environment and mix
In motile animals:
Male gets his sperm as close to the eggs as possible
What does broadcast spawning need?
Water
What are the cons of broadcast spawning?
Cant control delivery (waves and water disrupts delivery)
Requires large gamete numbers
Egg predation
How do some animals overcome the problems with broadcast spawning?
Protecting the eggs
Getting the sperm as close as possible to the eggs
Some males even brood the eggs
What are the two types of internal gamete release?
Direct and indirect
How do springtails mate?
1 - Male produces stalk material and the stalk sticks to the ground
Male gets up and places sperm droplet on top of the stalk
Hopes female comes by and uses his sperm
2 - Male produces stalk and sperm droplet
Pushes the female with his attenae towards stalk so she fertilises her eggs with his sperm
3- Male stands and faces the female and dances for her
Gets a rhythm and does 2 trial turns to see if she’s interested
If she is receptive, he will drop some sperm and she will pick it up
What does direct internal gamete release have to involve?
Copulation
