OnlineMedEd: Gynecology - "Incontinence" Flashcards
__________ incontinence is unique to women.
Stress
Which kind of incontinence presents with nocturia?

Why does having a cystocele cause stress incontinence?
The urethra cannot absorb pressure, but the bladder can. As such, urine leaks.
___________ is needed to truly diagnose urge incontinence.
Cystometry
What does cystometry show in those with urge incontinence?
Random spasms at all volumes
There are five main types of incontinence: ________________.
stress, urge, overflow, irritable bladder, and fistula
“Neurogenic bladder” is synonymous with _____________.
overflow incontinence
What can cause neurogenic bladder?
- MS
- Trauma
- Antispasmodics
How can you distinguish between urge incontinence and neurogenic bladder?
Those with NB will have full bladders (on exam and cystometry).
How is neurogenic bladder treated?
- Bethanechol (to induce voiding)
* Catheterization
What voiding symptoms does irritated bladder present with?
With inflammation of the bladder, people feel that they have to void and may not make it on time.
List three causes of irritable bladder.
- Infection
- Stones
- Cancer
What can cause urethral fistulas?
- Surgery
- Inflammation (crohn’s)
- Radiation
- Cancer
Explain the tampon test.
First, insert a tampon into the vagina. Second, inject blue dye into either the urethra or the rectum (wherever you think the fistula leads to). Remove the fistula. If there is dye on the tampon, then there is a fistula.
