Oncology Flashcards
Background: Tonsillar carcinomas are rarely reported in dogs. Metastatic typically to local LN. Negative prognostic indicator included presence of clinical signs.
Population: 123 client-owned dogs with diagnosis of tonsillar carcinoma con-firmed by cytology or histopathology. Unilateral disease in 115/123 cases
Results: Overall survival time (OST) was 126 days. MST 186d. Significantly longer survival in dogs without evidence of metastatic disease.
Positive prognostic factors = absence of clinicals signs at presentation, surgery (tonsillectomy), use of adjuvant chemotherapy and use of NSAIDs
Conclusion: Asymptomatic dogs, those treated with surgery, surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy, and NSAIDs may have a better prognosis than previously expected.
In dogs with tonsilar carcinoma, what factor was associated with shorter median survival time?
a) older age at presentation
b) left sided tonsilar enlargement
c) presence of clinical signs at time of diagnosis
d) No evicence of metastatic disease
c) presence of clinical signs at the time of diagnosis
