What is proximal vs distal?
Proximal is towards the heart
Distal is away from the heart
What is the difference between Abduction and Adduction?
Abduction is moving away from the body
Adduction is moving toward the body
What is the difference between Medial and Lateral?
Medial is towards the vertical midline
Lateral is away from the vertical midline
What is the difference between flexion and extension?
Flexion is the bending or flexing of the joint
Extension is the straightening of the joint
What is the difference between anterior and posterior?
Anterior is towards the front of the body
Posterior is toward the rear of the body
What is internal rotation vs external rotation?
Internal rotation is rotating towards the body
External rotation is rotating away from the body
What is the difference between pronation and supination of the foot?
Pronation is flattening the foot while supination of the foot is elevating the arch.
What is ankle dorsiflexion vs plantarflexion?
Dorsiflexion is flexing the ankle away from the ground
Plantarflexion is stepping toward the ground (GAS PEDAL)
What is ankle inversion vs ankle eversion?
Inversion is rolling the sole of the foot towards the vertical midline (Common rolled ankle)
Eversion is rolling the sole of the foot away from the vertical midline
What are some general off-the-field evaluation tips?
Be flexible with your assessment Be calm Be confident Listen to the patient Do not overstep your bounds
