indications (6)
- GERD (maintenance of healing in erosive esophagitis)
- Duodenal ulcers (with or without anti-invectives for Helicobacter pylori)
- Short-term treatment of active benign gastric ulcer
- Pathological hypersecretory conditions including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome =tumours cause OVERproduction of acid
- Reduction of risk of GI bleeding in critically ill patients
- OTC heartburn occuring >2 days a week
action (how does it work)? (patho)
Binds to an enzyme on gastric parietal cells in the prescence of acidic gastric pH, preventing the final transport of hydrogen ions into the gastric lumen.
What are the therapeutic effects of Omeprazole? (desired effect)
- Diminished accumulation of acid in the gastric lumen with lessened gastroesophageal reflux
- Healing of duodenal ulcers
critical side effects
most common:
-abdominal pain
-Increased risk of Clostridioides difficile infection, pneumonia, GI malignancies, bone loss, and fractures in older adults.
Life threatening:
hypersensitivity reactions
why is Miki taking this med?
for GERD & persistent heartburn
What side effects have been experienced by Miki (2)
- Hypocalcemia and risk of bone fractures as she has been taking the medication for over 8 weeks
- GI bleeding due to the occult blood that may be present in her stool
How is omeprazole taken? (2)
Omeprazole powder for oral suspension (due to Miki’s dysphasia),
and it might be more beneficial to take it at nighttime since it can make her drowsy.
What other medications of Miki’s should you take into consideration with omeprazole?
Alendronate and aspirin
