A

Produces analgesia and reduces inflammation and fever by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins. Also decreases platelet aggregation.

  1. Patient is at a higher risk of developing GI bleeding due to her age
  2. Patient has dysphasia
  3. Patient has GERD, and is taking alendronate which further increases the risk of developing GERD
  4. Patient has a history of darker stool which may have occult blood

How should ASA be administered?

A

After meals or with food, or an antacid to minimize gastric irritation. Food slows but does not alter the total amount absorbed. Patient must remain upright for at least 15 minutes after taking medication.

What lab results should you be checking?

A

Monitor hematocrit when using ASA in high doses to assess for GI blood loss. Or check WBC count if any symptoms associated with DRESS arise.
