What does ASA do? (4)
- Inflammatory disorders including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
- Mild to moderate pain
- Fever
- Preventing transient ischemic attacks and myocardial infarction
what is the action (how does it work)?
Produces analgesia and reduces inflammation and fever by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins. Also decreases platelet aggregation.
What are the therapeutic effects of ASA?
- Analgesia
- Reduction of inflammation
- Reduction of fever
- Decreased incidence of transecting ischemic attacks and myocardial infarction
Contraindication?
older adults: incr. risk of major bleeding
Indications
Inflammatory disorders including:
- Rheumatoid arthritis,
- Osteoarthritis.
-Mild to moderate pain.
-Fever.
-Prophylaxis of transient ischemic attacks and MI.
critical side effects
life threatening:
-hypersensitivity reactions
-GI bleeding
-drug reaction w/ eosinophilia (wbc) & systemic symptoms
why is miki taking this med
To prevent another ischemic stroke after her incident 6 months ago.
What is important to know about Miki in relation to this drug?
- Patient is at a higher risk of developing GI bleeding due to her age
- Patient has dysphasia
- Patient has GERD, and is taking alendronate which further increases the risk of developing GERD
- Patient has a history of darker stool which may have occult blood
How should ASA be administered?
After meals or with food, or an antacid to minimize gastric irritation. Food slows but does not alter the total amount absorbed. Patient must remain upright for at least 15 minutes after taking medication.
What lab results should you be checking?
Monitor hematocrit when using ASA in high doses to assess for GI blood loss. Or check WBC count if any symptoms associated with DRESS arise.
What side effects has Miki been experiencing
-worsening her GERD b/c of the side effects: gastric irritation, indigestion, GI bleeding.
- impacted her stool characteristics (black tarry stool) may be an indication of GI bleeding due to aspirin
