critical side effects
None for PO. Most frequent are hypercalcemia, constipation
Why is the client taking this med?
-Client is taking this medication to supplement Ca+ because she is diagnosed with OSTEOPOROSIS (35% bone mass loss)
-She is NOT taking it for her HEARTBURN. But provides TEMPORARY RELIEF from her heart burn
Any side effects experienced by miki?

What is important to know about this medication in relation to miki? (2)
- Miki is unaware of the med’s purpose = Important to remind her of its PURPOSE.
- RECONSIDER if this medication is working for Miki as she is permanently hunched, and experience back pain from an old spinal compression fracture (did not heal) and if it is not working maybe consider removing it from her intake list
nursing actions for the med (3)
- assess for HYPERCALCEMIA (nausea, vomiting, anorexia, thirst, severe constipation, bradycardia)
- muscle twitching & laryngospasm (involuntary contraction of the vocal cords).
- Monitor BP, pulse and ECG frequently to not any hypotension, bradycardia, arrhythmias and cardiac arrest
What does the client need to know about this med? (4)
- Advise that this med may cause CONSTIPATION
- NO MEDS 1-2 hours within taking this one
- Dont take meds with large amounts of oxalix acid (spinach) phytic acid (brans and cereal) and phosphurus (milk/dairy products)
- Advise client to notify them if signs of HYPERCALCEMIA occur (anorexia, nausea, vomiting, confusion, stupor, extreme diarrhea)
