What is Kanju?
The creativity born from African difficulty. Translates to “hustle”, “strive” in English. Not breaking rules, but playing a different game. (but legally breaking rules in a system that does not work for you)
Four examples of kanju
1)419- Nigerian Email scamming. Young men can earn lots of money from nothing through critical thinking, computer and English skills to escape poverty and help family
2) Traffic Marketing - creative entrepreneurship by selling a variety of products through car windows - quick mind and feet
3) Nollywood - Nigerian massive film industry which customizes film offers for a local audience
4) Undercover journalism - Anas who was able to fight corruption through this, despite unethical or illegal measures.
Grey economy
Informal economy, not accounted for, very prevalent in many African countries. Flip side: increase of corruption.
