Olfaction Flashcards
What are 3 main types of cells in olfactory epithelium?
Basal cells
Olfactory receptor cells
Supporting cells
What do basal cells do?
They are epithelial stem cells that will become new receptor cells.
What do olfactory receptor cells do?
They are bipolar cells whose dendrites bind to odorants and unmyelinated axons to form nerve
Function of piriform cortex?
Relay info to orbit frontal olfactory cortex (olfactory association cortex) and the dorsomedial thalamic nucleus.
Where are piriform and entorhinal cortex located?
In anterior portion of parahippocampal gurus surrounding amygdala
Where is primary gustatory cortex located?
In inferior portion of post central gyrus, operculum, and superior portion of insula
What carries taste from anterior 2/3 of tongue?
Central axons from psuedounipolar cells of cranial nerves:
VII (genicular ganglion)
What carries taste from posterior 1/3 of tongue?
Central axons from psuedouniipolar cells of cranial nerve IX (inferior ganglion)
