What are the 3 elements of ATC training?
Input = Training need
Process = Actual training
Output = Validation
What different types of people might need OJT in ATC?
New ATCO (Not previously valid)
New to unit (Previously valid)
Valid but with some issues that need correcting
New procedures or equipment
What should you know before you meet the trainee?
Their name
Past experience
Past issues with training
How do you establish a rapport with the trainee?
Meet away from the control room
Make it an informal chat
Get their name right
Allow the trainee time to talk
Avoid asking leading questions
Avoid causing offence
What is the OJTI responsible for? (CAP1251)
- Safety of the ATS that the student ATCO is providing
- With the ANSP, making sure that the trainee holds the correct license and medical certificate and has completed an approved training course
- Determining and reporting on the training progress
- Identifying and reporting deficiencies and suggesting remedial action to be taken
- Putting students forward for UE
- Supervising controllers who’ve had their UE suspended
- Reviewing the UTP to make sure that it is still fit for purpose
What does the OSCAR briefing method mean
O = Objectives
S = Standard
C = Conditions
A= ATC points and procedures
R= Recap
What are the three stages of OJT when first working with a trainee?

Practical
Why is the trainee talk-through beneficial?
- Shows that the trainee is listening
- Shows how much the trainee has understood
- Gets the trainee involved
- Helps to identify any weaknesses
- Confirms a safety orientation
- Allows the OJTI to retain full control
What are the two types of question?
Teaching Question
Testing Question
What is a probing question?
These types of question will be very specific and will probe the trainees understanding of the task

What are the 4 cases where the OJTI should take over from the student?
- Trainee request
- OJTI requirement
- Unexpected situation or a sudden pickup in traffic levels
- (A tactical pause of clocks can be used in STDI)
What should be done if it becomes clear that a dangerous situation is developing?
OJTI steps in to prevent it from happening
What should be done if a bad habit is being displayed?
OJTI should correct this immediately
What should be done if an error occurs but the effect shows at a later time?
OJTI should correct at an appropriate time
What should be done if it is clear that a lack of experience is causing an error?
No correction is required at the time
What should instructors be doing when correcting errors?
Be patient
Be encouraging
Use the demanding technique, to make the trainee come up with the answer
How should criticism be delivered?
First listen to what the trainee has to say
State the issue with what they did
Ask for a solution
Agree on a solution
