Oil Systems Flashcards
What would cause a filter to have metallic debris but none on the chip detector?
The debris is non ferrous and there for not magnetic
Which of the following pumps has the greater pumping capacity, pressure or scavenge?
Scavenge- has air to pump around as well as oil
What are the 4 subsystems that make up an oil system?
Reservoir and supply
Scavenge
Control
Venting
Why is engine oil filtered before reaching the nozzle?
To prevent the nozzles being blocked by debris
Why is there a scavenge system?
To prevent accumulation of oil in compartments and to keep reusing oil in the dry sump system
What is the purpose of the deliver in the vent system?
To split the oil from the air being vented
What type of pumps are oil pumps?
Supply pumps
What causes a gas turbine engine to make oil and when may it be discovered?
A leak in the fuel cooled oil cooler.
Can be discovered by smell when the filler cap is opened
What does a Reed switch use to give oil level indications?
Magnet on a float
What happens when a low oil pressure occurs?
The pressure switch closes sending the signal to the flight deck
Where does the engine oil thermocouple get its power from?
Nowhere
Why do you have to wait 5 mins after shut down before opening the filler cap?
To prevent having a jet of hot oil come out when the cap is off
Why are oil replenishments recorded?
To show signs of leaks if the levels don’t match up
Why is a cross check carried out on a MDP remove/replace?
Unknown
When SOAP sampling from the filler tube, why must a new tube be used each time?
To prevent the risk of contaminating new samples with old ones
