Inlets Flashcards
What type of duct does a conventional sub-sonic inlet duct have?
Divergent
What happens in the inlet duct when the aircraft is stationary while the engines are running?
The air is accelerated by the compressor
What effect will ram air have on the engine thrust?
The velocity will be converted to pressure
What is the term for when the all of the ram air has had its velocity converted?
Total ram recovery
How is flow separation in the inlet prevented?
Blow away jet
What is meant by the term “sub-critical”
Anything pre critical condition.
What is meant by”critical”?
When there is max airflow and max thrust
The shockwave happens at the most efficient point in the inlet
What is meant “by super critical”?
When there is a stronger normal shock-wave, creating an abrupt pressure rise and poor flow quality.
The shock wave happens right before the engine
What happens when the air passes over an oblique shockwave?
There is less of a reduction of speed than when the air passes over a normal shockwave.
What dictates the anti-icing method used on the engine?
The type of engine
Engine anti-ice valves are typically of what configuration?
Bleed air
Where does an engine get its air for the anti-icing from?
Bleed air or pneumatic systems
On an electrical anti-icing/de-icing system, what is the purpose of intermittently heated mats?
To remove the ice easily
Apart from air what are some other methods to de-ice the spinner?
Rubber spike
Hot oil
What effect will pneumatic anti-icing have on the engines operation?
The air will still be hot, so take care during ground runs.
