Offsetting Emissions Flashcards
How many offsetting programmes do you have?
140 and counting.
How much does it usually cost to offset 1ton of carbon?
$10-$20 per ton on average but ranges from $1 to $1000 depending on the project.
How much does it usually cost to offset carbon for a small business?
average person per year creates 20tons of co2.
How do you choose offsetting programmes you work with?
We provide a diverse range of certified and vetted offset programs from planting trees to capturing carbon emissions from the atmosphere.
Why are some offsetting programmes more expensive than others?
Some projects are more technologically advanced than others.
Are all of you offsetting programmes certified?
Yes
Where are your offsetting projects based?
Around the world.
Can we add carbon offsetting projects that we want to purchase carbon certificates from onto your platform?
Yes.
Do you know which vendors are already net zero carbon so we don’t have to double account for scope 3 carbon emissions?
Yes
What carbon offset project certification/registries do you use?
There are no government regulations in the voluntary emissions reduction (VER) market so there are only independent certification bodies and we use the best ones which are:
VCS by Verra - 67% market share in 2020 and in 2021 is 80%,
Gold Standard - 18% market share in 2020 and in 2021 is 14%, created by WWF
Climate Action Reserve - 9% market share in 2020 and in 2021 is 2.3%, mostly in US
American Carbon Registry - 4% market share in 2020 and in 2021 is 1.6%, mostly in US
Plan Vivo - 0,6% market share in 2020 and in 2021 is 0.75%, Scottish
CARB - 0,1% market share in 2020 and in 2021 is 1.4%
What is REDD+
REDD+ is a United Nations proven initiative to reduce deforestation and degradation around the world. So they offer offsets.
What about green washing?
The VER market is becoming more and more mature, standards are getting much better, and the process is getting easier, and more understandable actually some of the lessons from the voluntary carbon markets are being used in the compliance carbon markets. Also, each project has to have additionality and permanence.
Which standards do you comply with?
American Carbon Registry
Climate Action Reserve
Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standard
Gold Standard
ISO-14064
Social Carbon
Verified Carbon Standard
UNFCCC Carbon Credits (CDM, JI, AAU, etc.)
AS2050
GHG Protocol Product Standard or ISO14067.
What about double accounting?
Working with Gold Standard and Verra helps us avoid double accounting of carbon offsets.
Where do we get our carbon credits from?
Patch, we take no commissions.
