What are the functions of a coroner?
- Enquire manner of death
- Ensures investigations into
causes/circumstances are
done
What deaths MUST be reported to a coroner?
S- suicide
C- case unknown/no doctors certificate
U- unnatural/violent
M- medical, surgical or dental operations
B- birth deaths or pregnancy related deaths
I- institutional
E- enactments requires the holding of an inquest
(when the law dictates it must be reported)
Death inquest purpose 1?
To establish..
- FACT- that the person is dead
- IDENTITY
- CAUSE
- WHERE & WHEN
- CIRCUMSTANCES
Death inquest purpose 2?
-make recommendations or comments to the public so another death like this doesn’t occur
Death inquest purpose 3?
- to determine whether the death needs to be investigated
What kind of deaths MUST the coroner hold an inquiry?
- Suicide
- Institutional deaths
- Any death where the coroner is not sure of the cause
Who authorises and performs the ‘Post Mortem’?
Authorises: Coroner
Performs: Pathologist
What is a POL47?
Report to coroner form
